A Fire in Winter

It was in the year of the great storm, when the snows fell for weeks, till even the animals cried out to Nokomis and begged her either to relent, or else speak to Gitchi Manitou. Then Manitou heard, and there was a great quiet over the land, though it remained bitter cold. Branches cracked, and fell like icicles, and no one could keep warm.
