The War Goes On
Kael wondered why cracking the cube didn’t make him more happy. It had only cost a few good men. There’d be more bloodshed, but that was alright. A good war was better than a bad peace. God knew he’d probably be following the others soon enough. But there was one question he’d never really asked himself: What did victory look like?

He nodded. “Yes. Continue your walk. Get familiar with the place. Let me know if you encounter any friction.”
I chewed my lip, wondering what that could mean.
“How will I find you?” I asked instead.
He smiled. “Oh, you won’t need to. I’ll be watching.”

Brooklyn’s nano factory was located in Williamsburg, in what used to be called the Brooklyn Flea. Years ago, the place had been leveled and cleared, and turned into a sort of ugly castle. It consisted of five concrete buildings in the brutalist style.

The real possibility of being shot, or locked away in something called the Hole, sobered him. Some answer was expected, but he’d no idea what form it should take. Critical Theory Theory was not helping. So, in a sudden flash of inspiration, he decided to do something utterly novel. He would just tell the facts as they were.

It was all over the news. The Butcher caught on film. A black man in a standard-issue mask was taking out the BS squad, and adding in the grocery store manager for good measure. As he sat there, juices running down his chin, he couldn’t help but feel a little awe at the beatdown he’d administered.

The little boy grit his teeth, and nodded. A look of understanding passed between them. Shelton felt something he’d never felt before. It was new. It was powerful. It was danger. And he kind of liked it.
